Wonders of Arouca

Just an hour from Porto, the mountains and river gorges around Arouca conceal some of the most spectacular scenery and most thrilling experiences in northern Portugal. The 516 Arouca Bridge - the world's longest pedestrian suspension bridge - sways 175 metres above the Paiva river on a slender span of 516 metres, offering views of terrifying beauty. Below it, the wild Paiva river carves through a landscape that has been designated a UNESCO Geopark for its extraordinary geological heritage, including some of the world's largest trilobite fossils.

516 Arouca - The World's Longest Pedestrian Suspension Bridge

Opened in 2021 and immediately acclaimed as the world's longest pedestrian suspension bridge, the 516 Arouca Bridge is an experience that combines engineering marvel with raw natural drama. Its 516-metre span of steel cables and timber slats stretches across the Paiva river gorge at a height of 175 metres, connecting two clifftops above rapids and boulders far below. The bridge sways perceptibly underfoot, the gorge falls away on both sides, and the wind from the mountains adds to the sensation of being suspended above an ancient, elemental landscape. For those prepared for its vertiginous demands, it offers views - and feelings - that are genuinely unforgettable.

Arouca UNESCO Geopark

The mountains and valleys around Arouca have been designated a UNESCO Global Geopark for a geological heritage of exceptional interest, accumulated over 500 million years of earth history. The star attraction is the extraordinary collection of giant trilobite fossils preserved in the schist rock of the region - some of the largest trilobites ever found, up to 90 centimetres long, cast in stone on valley floors and cliff faces. But the geopark is far more than fossils: it encompasses dramatic waterfalls, schist villages of medieval character, ancient forest, and high moorland that together form a landscape of wild, compelling beauty within easy reach of Porto.

The Paiva Walkways

Running for eight kilometres along the banks of the wild Paiva river, the Passadiços do Paiva is one of the most beautiful walking routes in Portugal - a wooden boardwalk that traces the river's course through gorges, over rapids, past waterfalls, and through dense riparian woodland of oak, alder, and fern. The Paiva is one of the last truly wild rivers in Iberia, its water running clear and cold over schist boulders, its banks little altered by human activity. The walkways pass through landscapes of extraordinary natural beauty, from quiet river beaches to the spray of small waterfalls, with the sound of rushing water as a constant companion throughout.

Schist Mountain Villages

Hidden in the folds of the mountains above the Paiva gorge, the schist villages of the Arouca region survive as some of the most authentic examples of traditional rural architecture in northern Portugal. Built entirely from the local dark-grey schist stone - walls, roofs, paths, and terraced fields alike - these small communities perch on steep hillsides with a tenacity born of centuries of mountain farming. Life here revolves around the rhythms that have shaped the region for generations: the tending of terraced vegetable gardens, the keeping of small flocks, and the ancient craft of working schist into the buildings and walls that give the landscape its distinctive, unified character.

Good to Know

Before Your Arouca Day

The bridge is popular and requires advance planning. Here is what to know.

Do we need to pre-book bridge tickets?

Yes, absolutely. The 516 Arouca Bridge has a timed entry system and slots frequently sell out, especially on weekends and in summer. We strongly recommend booking online as soon as you have your tour date confirmed. Your guide can advise on how to book.

Is the bridge scary?

The bridge is designed to sway slightly - this is normal engineering and completely safe. However, if you have severe vertigo or a fear of heights, this may not be the right experience for you. Looking through the metal mesh floor to 175 metres of gorge below is not for the faint-hearted, but the vast majority of visitors find it exhilarating rather than frightening.

How much walking is involved?

The bridge itself is 516 metres long (a one-way crossing). There is also a trail from the car park to the bridge entrance (about 15-20 minutes each way). Comfortable walking shoes and a head for heights are required.

What are the Paiva Walkways?

The Passadicos do Paiva are a system of wooden boardwalks running 8 km along the Paiva River gorge through spectacular scenery. A full walk takes 2-3 hours each way. An abbreviated section near the bridge can be walked in 30-45 minutes and is an excellent complement to the bridge crossing.

Is it suitable for children?

Children over 6 are generally welcome on the bridge. The experience can be magical for confident children, but it genuinely depends on their comfort with heights. We recommend assessing their reaction honestly before booking bridge tickets.
