Coimbra Unveiled

Coimbra occupies a hillside above the Mondego River and has been a centre of learning since the 13th century. Its university - one of the oldest in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site - crowns the Alta, the upper city, while below, in the Baixa, students in black capes fill the café terraces and Fado performances echo through the stone alleys. This is a city that lives and breathes its extraordinary heritage.

University of Coimbra

Founded in Lisbon in 1290 and permanently established in Coimbra in 1537, this is one of the oldest universities in continuous operation in the world. The hilltop campus - a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2013 - is a journey through Portuguese architectural history, from the Renaissance courtyard of the Via Latina to the ornate Baroque clocktower and the extraordinary ceremonial halls of the Paço das Escolas.

The Joanina Library

Built between 1717 and 1728 on the orders of King João V, the Biblioteca Joanina is one of the most beautiful rooms in the world. Three interconnected halls rise three storeys high, their shelves housing 300,000 volumes behind gilded lacquered bookcases of Chinese inspiration. The ceiling frescoes, the gold leaf, and the smell of the ancient books combine to create an almost overwhelming sensory experience.

Coimbra Fado

While Lisbon's Fado is sung by women of all ages, Coimbra Fado is a uniquely male tradition - performed exclusively by university students and graduates in their black academic capes, it carries a particular quality of yearning and intellectualism. The lyrics deal with saudade, lost love, and the passing of youth. To hear Coimbra Fado performed live on the stone steps of the old university quarter is an unforgettable experience.

The Old Cathedral (Sé Velha)

One of the finest examples of Romanesque architecture in Portugal, the Sé Velha was begun in 1164 and completed a century later - a solid fortress-like structure that survived the Moorish era intact. Its crenellated roofline and austere carved portal contrast beautifully with the elaborate Gothic altarpiece within. The cloister, with its pointed arches and carved capitals, is one of the most serene spaces in the city.

Good to Know

Before Your Coimbra Day

Coimbra rewards the curious visitor. Here is what to know before you go.

Can we visit the Joanina Library?

Yes, but entry is timed and slots sell out. The Joanina Library houses 300,000 volumes from the 16th-18th centuries in gilded Baroque bookcases - it is one of the most beautiful interiors in the world. We strongly recommend pre-booking online. Your guide can advise.

Is Fado performed during the day?

Coimbra Fado is traditionally performed in the evening. During a day visit you can experience the musical tradition through the Fado Museum and the atmospheric lanes of the Baixa where it was born. Some restaurants offer daytime Fado performances - your guide will know the current options.

What makes Coimbra Fado different from Lisbon Fado?

Coimbra Fado is traditionally sung by male university students in academic robes. It is more formal, literary, and melancholy than Lisbon Fado, with roots in the academic and cultural life of the university.

Is the university open to visitors?

Yes. The university complex (the Paço das Escolas) is open to visitors with a ticket that includes the Joanina Library, the ceremonial rooms, and the university tower. Entry to the university grounds themselves is free.

What is the Queima das Fitas festival?

The Queima das Fitas is the annual end-of-year celebration where graduating students burn their faculty ribbons. Held in May, it fills the city with music and festivities and is one of the most joyful events in Portugal.
