Wonders of Peso da Régua

Sitting at the gateway to the UNESCO Douro Valley wine region, where the river broadens between its great flanking walls of terraced schist vineyards, Peso da Régua is the historic capital of Port wine country. It was here that the Marquis of Pombal established the first demarcated wine region in the world in 1756, and it is from here that the story of the Douro - of the quintas, the lodges, the rabelo boats, and the extraordinary wine they carry - begins. A day in Régua is a day immersed in one of the world's great food and wine landscapes.

The Historic Douro Railway

The Historic Douro Railway

Few railway journeys in the world match the Douro line for sheer scenic drama. Built along the steep banks of the river in the late 19th century, the line from Régua to Pinhão winds for some 25 kilometres through the heart of the terraced wine country - clinging to the cliff face above the river, diving through rock tunnels, and emerging at bends that reveal ever more spectacular views of the vine-covered schist slopes and the broad, slow river below. The stations along the route are decorated with extraordinary blue-and-white azulejo tile panels depicting scenes of Douro life and harvest. The journey from Régua to Pinhão is, quite simply, among the most beautiful train rides in Europe.

The Port Wine Quintas

The Port Wine Quintas

The Douro Valley's most characteristic feature is its quintas - the wine estates that occupy the terraced hillsides in a patchwork of ancient stone walls and carefully tended vines. Many of the greatest Port wine houses maintain their principal production quintas in the valley between Régua and Pinhão, and most are open to visitors for guided tours and tastings. To visit a Douro quinta in the late afternoon - walking the terraced vineyards as the shadows lengthen, learning how the grapes are still foot-trodden in granite lagares during the September harvest, and tasting a range of wines with views across the valley - is one of the most civilised and rewarding experiences that Portugal has to offer.

The Régua Riverfront and Douro Museum

The Régua Riverfront and Douro Museum

The riverfront at Régua is the living heart of the wine trade - a waterfront of old wine lodges, modern tasting rooms, and the Museu do Douro, which tells the complete story of the valley, its wine, its people, and its remarkable landscape in a series of beautifully designed galleries. The terrace of the museum restaurant, overlooking the river with the terraced vineyards rising on both banks, is one of the finest places in Portugal to eat regional food matched with Douro wines. From the quay, traditional rabelo boats and modern river cruise vessels depart for excursions up and down the valley - the most effortlessly beautiful way to take in the Douro landscape.

The Traditional Rabelo Boats

The Traditional Rabelo Boats

Before the railway came and before the dams were built to tame the Douro's rapids, the only way to bring the wine from the upper valley quintas to the lodges of Vila Nova de Gaia was by rabelo boat - flat-bottomed, high-sterned wooden vessels perfectly designed for navigating the treacherous rapids of the undammed river. Each spring, after the winter rains had raised the water level, a flotilla of laden rabelos would make the hazardous downriver journey, their square sails billowing and their crews working enormous oars to steer through the white water. Today, restored rabelo boats moored at Régua's quay serve as a vivid reminder of the ancient tradition that made Port wine possible.

Good to Know

Before Your Peso da Regua Day

A few things to know before visiting the capital of Port wine country.

How is this different from the Douro Valley tour?

The Douro Valley private tour focuses on wine quinta visits and the most scenic stretches of the valley, with an integrated wine tasting experience. The Regua tour centres more on the town itself, the Douro Museum, the railway station, and the river - it is ideal if you want a taste of the Douro without a full wine-focused day.

Can we do a wine tasting?

Yes, with advance planning. Regua has several wine caves and quinta tasting rooms near the town. We can incorporate a tasting into the day - let us know when you book.

What is the Douro Museum?

The Museu do Douro in Regua tells the complete story of the Douro wine region - its geology, its communities, its agriculture, and its wines. It is one of the best regional museums in Portugal, housed in a beautifully restored riverside building.

What is a rabelo boat?

The barco rabelo is the traditional flat-bottomed wooden boat once used to transport wine barrels down the Douro rapids from the quintas to the port wine lodges in Vila Nova de Gaia (across from Porto). The boats are now preserved and displayed along the Regua riverfront.

Can we take a river cruise?

Yes. Short river cruises from Regua are available seasonally, typically including the stretch to Pinhao (the most scenic part of the valley) and back. They can be incorporated into the day with advance planning - let us know when you book.
