The Heart of Ponte de Lima

Founded as a municipality in 1125 - making it the oldest town in Portugal - Ponte de Lima curves gracefully along the southern bank of the Lima River, overlooked by medieval towers and edged by gardens that have barely changed in centuries. The town's famous fortnight-long feiras (markets), held since 1125, and its surrounding landscape of quintas and vine-covered trellises make it one of the most authentic corners of northern Portugal.

The Roman Bridge

The long, low bridge that gave the town its name is one of Portugal's most photographed monuments - a graceful sequence of Roman and medieval arches spanning the broad, shallow Lima River. Dating to the 2nd century AD on its original Roman piers, it was widened and extended in the 14th century. Walking its worn stones as the Lima glimmers below, with the medieval town rising on the far bank, is one of Portugal's great simple pleasures.

The Manor Houses of the Lima Valley

The Lima Valley is lined with some of the finest baroque manor houses in Portugal - vast granite solares surrounded by formal gardens, vineyards, and ancient woodlands. Many belong to the Solares de Portugal network and welcome visitors for tastings and tours. The combination of architectural grandeur, centuries of family history, and the intimate scale of the valley makes this one of the most rewarding wine tourism experiences in the country.

Vinho Verde Country

The Lima Valley lies at the heart of the Vinho Verde wine region - the largest DOC in Portugal and producer of the country's most distinctive white wine. Low in alcohol, high in acidity, and laced with a natural light effervescence, a well-chilled Vinho Verde on a warm afternoon beside the Lima is one of life's small perfections. Local quintas offer tastings of everything from simple table wines to serious single-variety expressions that rival any in Portugal.

The Riverside Gardens

Ponte de Lima's riverside gardens - the Jardins dos Terceiros and the walled vegetable plots along the Lima's edge - are among the most beautiful public spaces in northern Portugal. Ancient plane trees cast dappled shade over the paths, and the whole scene is framed by the medieval towers and the distant hills of the Minho. On market days, the gardens fill with stalls, music, and the smell of roasting meats - a scene essentially unchanged since the Middle Ages.

Good to Know

Before Your Ponte de Lima Day

A few things to know before visiting Portugal's oldest and most gracious town.

Can we visit a Vinho Verde estate?

Yes, with advance notice. The Lima valley is the heartland of Vinho Verde wine. We can arrange a visit and tasting at a local quinta as part of the tour - just let us know when you book.

Is the Roman bridge really Roman?

The current bridge dates mostly from the medieval period, but it follows the line of the original Roman crossing of the Lima River. The town's name means "bridge over the Lima" and the crossing has been here since Roman times.

What is the biweekly feira?

Ponte de Lima has held a fair every two weeks on the river meadow since 1125 - making it one of the oldest continuing markets in Portugal. If your visit coincides with it, the fair adds wonderful colour and life to the riverside.

Are the manor house gardens open to visit?

Several of the baroque manor houses around Ponte de Lima open their formal gardens to visitors. Some also offer accommodation. Your guide will recommend which are open on the day of your visit.

Can we combine Ponte de Lima with Viana do Castelo?

Both are in the Lima valley, just 25 km apart, and combine very naturally into a single day. Let us know when you book and we will plan the best route.
