Wonders of Sintra

Rising from the forest-cloaked Serra de Sintra above the Atlantic, Sintra is one of Europe's most extraordinary and otherworldly destinations - a UNESCO World Heritage Site where Portuguese kings built fantasy palaces among the oaks and pines, each more extravagant than the last. Byron called it "glorious Eden"; the Moors considered its misty heights sacred. Even today, rounding a bend in the wooded hillside to find Pena Palace blazing in crimson and gold above the trees, the sense of wonder is immediate and total.

Pena Palace

Few buildings on earth are as immediately arresting as the Palácio da Pena - a 19th-century romantic confection of towers, battlements, domes, and drawbridges painted in shades of ochre, crimson, and gold that blaze against the forest and sky like something conjured from a dream. Built for King Fernando II on the ruins of a Hieronymite monastery, Pena is a joyous architectural fantasy drawing on Gothic, Manueline, Moorish, and Renaissance styles in wilful, exhilarating abundance. Its hilltop position, the highest in the Sintra range, offers views on clear days that stretch from the Tagus estuary to the open Atlantic.

The Moorish Castle

Long before the romantic palaces of the 19th century, the Moors built their fortress on the highest ridge of the Sintra hills in the 8th or 9th century AD - and its great crenellated walls still stride dramatically across the rocky hilltops today. Conquered by Afonso Henriques, the first King of Portugal, in 1147, the Castelo dos Mouros was subsequently restored and romanticised in the 19th century. Walking its battlements, clinging to the granite crags above the treetops, with the Atlantic glittering to the west and the plains of the Tagus stretching east, is one of the great physical experiences of Portugal.

Quinta da Regaleira

If Pena Palace is Sintra's most spectacular sight, the Quinta da Regaleira is its most mysterious. This late 19th-century Gothic fantasy estate - built for the eccentric millionaire António Carvalho Monteiro - is saturated with Masonic, Rosicrucian, Templar, and alchemical symbolism worked into every tower, grotto, tunnel, and terrace. At its heart is the extraordinary Initiatic Well: a deep spiral staircase descending into the earth through nine landings, its stonework carved with symbols of initiation and transformation. Exploring the Quinta's subterranean tunnels and mossy grottos is an adventure unlike any other in Portugal.

Monserrate Palace

Less visited than its famous neighbours but arguably the most purely beautiful of Sintra's palaces, the Palácio de Monserrate is a romantic 19th-century masterpiece that blends neo-Gothic, Moorish, and Indian architectural influences into a dream of white stone rising from an extraordinary botanic garden. Once leased by William Beckford - the wealthiest Englishman of his day - and later rebuilt for another English millionaire, Francis Cook, the palace and its exotic gardens planted with species from every corner of the world were allowed to fall into romantic ruin before being recently and lovingly restored to their full, breathtaking splendour.

The Day in Sintra

How the Day Unfolds

An early start from Porto makes the most of the day. We focus on two or three monuments rather than rushing through all of them - quality over quantity in a place where each palace deserves unhurried attention.

Early morning

Departure from Porto

We leave Porto early (around 7:00-7:30 AM) for the 3-hour drive south. Your guide will introduce Sintra's history and the story of the Romantic movement that inspired the extravagant 19th-century palaces.

Late morning

Pena Palace

The unmissable centrepiece of Sintra - a flamboyant 19th-century Romantic palace in vivid crimson and gold, perched above the clouds on the highest point of the Serra. The park and gardens surrounding it are as rewarding as the palace itself.

Midday

Lunch in Sintra Village

Lunch in Sintra's picturesque village, with time to try the local queijadas (cheese cakes) and travesseiros (almond cream pastries) that have made the town famous.

Afternoon

Quinta da Regaleira

The Gothic-Manueline estate of Quinta da Regaleira is Sintra at its most mysterious - a palace, chapel, and gardens filled with Masonic and Templar symbolism, underground tunnels, and an extraordinary initiatic well that descends 27 metres in a spiral.

Late afternoon

Good to Know

Before Your Sintra Day

Sintra is one of the most visited sites in Portugal. Here is what you need to know to have the best possible experience.

Should we pre-book palace tickets?

Yes, strongly advised for Pena Palace, especially in spring and summer. Queues without a ticket can be very long. We recommend booking online before your tour date. Your guide can advise on the best way to do this.

Is there a lot of walking involved?

Yes - Pena Palace involves significant uphill walking within the park, and Regaleira has narrow paths and some steps. Comfortable walking shoes are essential. We drive you between sites so the only walking is within each monument.

How long is the drive from Porto?

Approximately 3 hours in each direction, depending on traffic. We recommend a very early departure to maximise your time in Sintra.

Can we visit more than two palaces?

In principle yes, but we recommend quality over quantity. Rushing through four palaces means seeing none of them properly. Two to three sites with unhurried time is the best approach.

Are the local pastries worth trying?

Yes - Sintra's queijadas (fresh cheese cakes in a crispy pastry shell) and travesseiros (pillow-shaped almond cream pastries) are genuinely exceptional and unique to the town. Do not skip them.
