Wonders of the National Park

Peneda-Gerês is Portugal's only national park - and one of the most biologically diverse and scenically spectacular landscapes in the Iberian Peninsula. Rivers carve through granite gorges, ancient oak and laurel forests shelter wolves and wild Garrano horses, and granite villages perch on hillsides that Roman legionaries once marched through. A day in Gerês is a reminder of what Europe looked like before the modern world.

The Cascades of Gerês

Gerês is a land of waterfalls. One of the best known is Fecha de Barjas, also called Cascata do Tahiti, on the Rio Arado - a series of falls tumbling through a granite gorge into clear pools. In summer, the pools are a natural swimming spot of great beauty; in winter, the volume of water makes the falls thunderous. Other cascades along the Arado and across the park are equally spectacular.

The Caniçada and Vilarinho das Furnas Reservoirs

The great reservoir lakes of Gerês, set among forested mountain slopes, create landscapes of mirror-still water reflecting ancient granite villages and hillside terraces. The Vilarinho das Furnas reservoir on the Rio Homem is particularly dramatic - in dry years the submerged ruins of the old village of Vilarinho da Furna emerge from the water like a ghost town, a poignant reminder of what was lost when the valley was flooded in the early 1970s as the dam was built.

The Granite Villages

Scattered through the valleys and hillsides of Gerês are ancient stone villages that time appears to have forgotten - clusters of granite houses, communal bread ovens, Roman milestones, and traditional granaries (espigueiros) perched on stilts to protect the corn from rodents. The village of Lindoso, overlooked by its 13th-century castle, and the hamlet of Soajo with its spectacular granary terrace are particularly striking.

Roman Roads and Walking Trails

Gerês is crisscrossed with ancient paths, including sections of the Roman military road from Braga to Astorga (Via XVIII, the Geira) - long stretches of which survive along the Rio Homem, together with Roman bridges and original milestones. Walking these roads through the forest, you follow in the footsteps of legions, pilgrims, and generations of mountain farmers. The park's network of marked trails ranges from gentle riverside walks to demanding summit ridges with views across two countries.

Good to Know

Before Your Gerês Day

The national park is a natural environment. Here is what to know before visiting.

How much walking is involved?

As much or as little as you choose. We visit scenic viewpoints and waterfall areas reachable by car, with optional short walks (15-45 minutes) on marked paths. If you want a longer hike, let us know in advance and we will plan accordingly.

Will we see wild horses or wolves?

The Garrano horses, which live mostly wild, are often seen on the hillsides of the park. Wolves are much more elusive and rarely seen by day visitors.

Can we swim in the rivers or lake?

Yes - swimming in the natural pools and rivers of Gerês is one of the great summer pleasures. In July and August the water is perfect. In cooler months it can be very cold. Your guide will take you to the best spots.

What should we wear?

Comfortable walking shoes are essential. The park can be significantly cooler than Porto, especially in spring and autumn. A waterproof jacket is always sensible in the mountains regardless of season.

Is Gerês suitable for children?

Yes - children love Gerês. The waterfalls, river pools, and especially the wild horses are a wonderful experience for all ages. Tell us the ages of your children when you book and we will tailor the stops accordingly.
