The Wonders of Lamego

Nestled in a valley of vineyards above the Douro, Lamego is one of Portugal's most rewarding small cities - home to a baroque staircase sanctuary that rivals Bom Jesus, a 12th-century cathedral, a remarkable museum of Flemish tapestries, and a long sparkling wine tradition. Few places in Portugal pack this much quality into such a compact and beautiful space.

Nossa Senhora dos Remédios

Lamego's crowning glory is the baroque pilgrimage staircase of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios - 686 steps climbing a wooded hillside through landings of chapels, fountains, and allegorical statuary to a baroque and rococo church at the summit. Every year from 6 to 8 September, pilgrims arrive for the great festival, many ascending on their knees as an act of devotion. The panoramic view from the church terrace over Lamego and the surrounding vineyards is magnificent.

The Sé Cathedral of Lamego

One of the oldest cathedrals in Portugal, Lamego's Sé was founded in the 12th century - according to a tradition that historians now consider legendary, Lamego hosted the first Cortes (parliament) of Portugal in 1143, recognising Afonso Henriques as king. The cathedral tower is Romanesque, the cloister Renaissance, and the interior has been layered with chapels and decoration across nine centuries. The nearby Museu de Lamego houses extraordinary Flemish tapestries and altarpiece panels by Grão Vasco.

Lamego's Sparkling Wine Tradition

For well over a century, Lamego has been producing espumante - a naturally sparkling wine made by the traditional method in the Távora-Varosa wine region. The Caves da Raposeira, founded more than 120 years ago, is one of the best-known sparkling wine producers in Portugal and offers tours and tastings in its atmospheric cellars. The region's still wines - from the Douro and Távora-Varosa denominations - are equally worth exploring.

The Castle of Lamego

High above the city, the medieval castle of Lamego commands extraordinary views over the Douro Valley and its vine-covered slopes. Raised on the site of an ancient hill settlement, with 11th-century Muslim walls and a keep added in the 12th century, the castle was taken from the Muslims by Ferdinand I of León in 1057. The keep and both lines of walls survive, and the climb through the old quarter below - a maze of narrow streets lined with traditional houses - is as rewarding as the destination.

Good to Know

Before Your Lamego Day

A few things to know before visiting this baroque jewel of the Douro highlands.

How many steps are in the Remédios staircase?

The great baroque staircase of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios has 686 steps, rising from the town through wooded gardens and chapel-filled landings to the church at the top. You do not need to climb all of them - the lower sections and the view from key landings are rewarding in themselves.

Is Lamego sparkling wine famous?

Yes. The Caves da Raposeira and other producers in the Lamego area have been making espumante (Portuguese sparkling wine) for over a century. It is light, excellent, and completely different from Cava or Prosecco. A tasting is highly recommended.

Can we combine Lamego with the Douro Valley?

Lamego lies above the Douro and combines very naturally with a Douro Valley tour or a stop at Peso da Régua. Let us know when you book and we will design the best combined route.

What is in the Lamego Museum?

The Museu de Lamego is a well-regarded regional museum, housing an extraordinary collection of Flemish tapestries, Portuguese paintings, gilded altarpieces, and furniture. It rewards an unhurried visit.

How long do we need in Lamego?

Two to three hours for a relaxed visit covering the staircase, cathedral, historic centre, and a wine tasting. Combined with the drive from Porto of about 1 hour 30 minutes each way, this makes a full but very rewarding day.
