Batalha, Stone Testament to a Nation's Faith

Batalha, Stone Testament to a Nation's Faith

Where a King's Vow to the Virgin Became the Greatest Gothic Church in Portugal

Wonders of Batalha

On the 14th of August 1385, the outnumbered Portuguese army of King João I defeated the Castilian forces at Aljubarrota in a battle that secured Portugal's independence for two centuries. João had vowed to build a great church to the Virgin Mary if he prevailed - and the Mosteiro de Santa Maria da Vitória at Batalha is the magnificent result. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is among the finest Gothic buildings in the world and one of the most moving in Europe.

The Monastery of Batalha

The Monastery of Batalha

Rising above the fields of central Portugal in a forest of pinnacles, flying buttresses, and elaborate stonework, the Mosteiro da Batalha is a building that stops the breath. Begun in 1386 and worked on by successive architects for over a century, it is a confident synthesis of Portuguese Gothic and Manueline styles that achieves a rare combination of grandeur and refinement. The west façade alone - a wall of carved stone niches, canopies, and figures that covers every surface with the controlled exuberance of the finest European Gothic - is among the most elaborately beautiful architectural compositions in the world.

The Royal Cloister

The Royal Cloister

If the exterior of Batalha overwhelms with its Gothic ambition, the Royal Cloister within is where the building reaches its most ravishing perfection. The cloister arches, added in the early 16th century in the Manueline style at its peak of elaboration, are filled with stone tracery of extraordinary intricacy - carved armillary spheres, twisted ropes, coral branches, and natural forms woven into screens of such delicacy that stone seems to have been transformed into lacework. Filtered light plays through the stone lattice onto the cloister garth below, creating an effect of unearthly beauty that ranks among the great interior experiences of European architecture.

The Founder's Chapel

The Founder's Chapel

At the heart of Batalha lies the Capelas do Fundador, a jewel of Portuguese Gothic architecture commissioned by João I as his dynastic mausoleum. At its centre stand the joint tombs of João I and his English queen, Philippa of Lancaster, daughter of John of Gaunt - their hands clasped in a gesture of conjugal tenderness that is one of the most humanly touching details in all of Portuguese art. Around them lie the tombs of their children, including the Infante Dom Henrique, known to history as Prince Henry the Navigator, who stands at the origin of the Age of Discovery and, with it, the modern world.

The Unfinished Chapels

The Unfinished Chapels

At the east end of Batalha, approached through a doorway of almost overwhelming Manueline richness, stand the Capelas Imperfeitas - the Unfinished Chapels - and they are one of the strangest and most haunting sights in all of Portugal. Begun by King Duarte in the early 15th century as a royal mausoleum, construction was abandoned when resources were diverted to building Belém in Lisbon, and the chapels were never roofed. The result is an octagonal space open to the sky, its walls and the extraordinary doorway encrusted with Manueline carving of the most extravagant imagination, grass growing between the ancient stones, and the sky where the vault should be - an accidental ruin of sublime, melancholy power.
