Wonders of Nazaré

Clinging to a dramatic stretch of the Silver Coast between cliff and sea, Nazaré is one of Portugal's most vivid and compelling destinations. It is simultaneously a place of ancient fishing culture, extraordinary natural beauty, and a modern legend - for the underwater canyon that lies off Praia do Norte has made Nazaré the stage for the most astonishing big-wave surfing on the planet. Above the beach, the whitewashed clifftop village of Sítio looks down on everything with ancient, unruffled calm.

The World's Biggest Waves

Beneath the surface of the Atlantic off Nazaré's Praia do Norte runs the Nazaré Canyon - a vast underwater gorge 5,000 metres deep that focuses and amplifies the energy of ocean swells travelling uninterrupted from the coast of Newfoundland. The result is the largest surfable waves ever ridden: monsters of 20, 25, even 30 metres that have made Nazaré the undisputed capital of big-wave surfing and given rise to records that seemed impossible just two decades ago. On winter days when the swells arrive, the clifftop at Sítio fills with spectators watching in awe as tiny figures on enormous boards confront the raw power of the Atlantic.

Sítio - The Clifftop Village

High above the beach, reached by a vertiginous funicular that has been hauling passengers up the 110-metre cliff since 1889, the whitewashed village of Sítio looks out over the Atlantic from its extraordinary perch. At its edge stands the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Nazaré, built on the spot where, according to legend, the Virgin Mary appeared to a medieval knight and miraculously stopped his horse at the cliff's edge. The small chapel on the very lip of the promontory offers what may be the most dramatic coastal view in Portugal - the vast sweep of beach and ocean laid out below, the canyon's dark waters visible on calm days.

The Fishing Tradition

Long before the surfers arrived, Nazaré was defined entirely by the sea and by the men and women who lived from it. The town's fishing culture is one of the most distinctive and photogenic in Portugal - a tradition of brightly painted wooden boats, hand-mended nets, and the patient work of drying salted fish in the sea breeze. The fisherwomen of Nazaré are famous throughout the country for their traditional seven-petticoat dress - a practical garment evolved over generations for life by the sea. Even today, amid the cafés and souvenir shops, the authentic rhythms of a fishing community persist, most vividly in the early mornings on the beach.

Praia da Nazaré

Stretching in a great arc of golden sand between the cliff of Sítio and the distant headland to the south, the Praia da Nazaré is one of the longest and most impressive beaches on the Portuguese Atlantic coast. In summer it fills with visitors from across Europe drawn by the reliably warm water, the Atlantic rollers, and the backdrop of the old town rising behind the seafront. In winter, when the crowds have gone and the big swells arrive, the same beach becomes a place of raw, dramatic power - waves crashing along its entire length, spray visible from the clifftop, the Atlantic asserting its ancient authority over this small stretch of the Portuguese coast.

Massive Atlantic waves breaking at Praia do Norte in Nazaré, Portugal

Good to Know

Before Your Nazare Day

A few things to know before visiting the land of big waves and ancient fishing tradition.

Can we see the famous big waves?

The record-breaking waves at Praia do Norte occur from October to March, driven by the underwater Nazare Canyon. In summer, the waves are smaller and the beach is perfect for swimming. If seeing monster waves is your goal, visit in winter - ideally checking surf forecasts in advance.

What is the Nazare Canyon?

The Nazare Canyon is an underwater geological formation running 170 km along the coast and reaching 5,000 metres deep. When Atlantic swells travel up the canyon they are compressed and amplified, creating waves of up to 30 metres or more - the tallest ever ridden by surfers.

What is the seven-skirt tradition?

Nazare's fisherwomen are famous for wearing seven petticoats in the seven colours of the rainbow, a tradition of disputed origin. While full traditional dress is now reserved for festivals and older generations, you will still see women in traditional black aprons and headscarves in the old town.

Is the funicular to Sitio worth taking?

Yes - the funicular (ascensor) has been running since 1889 and connects the beach promenade to the clifftop village of Sitio. The ride costs a few euros and the views from the cliff edge over the beach are spectacular. We can also drive to Sitio if preferred.

What should we eat in Nazare?

Fresh grilled fish - particularly caldeirada (fish stew), percebes (barnacles), and corvina (meagre). Nazare's fish is exceptional and the harbour restaurants serve some of the best seafood on the Silver Coast.
