The Valley of Wine and Wonder

Where Ancient Vines Tell Stories Older Than the Landscape Itself

Chapters of the Valley

Carved by the Douro River over millennia, this UNESCO World Heritage landscape of terraced vineyards and schist hillsides is one of the oldest wine regions on Earth. Here, time moves to the rhythm of the harvest, and every quinta holds secrets passed down through generations.

The Terraced Vineyards

The Terraced Vineyards

Marvel at the monumental human achievement of the socalcos - dry-stone terraces hand-carved into steep hillsides over centuries. Each row of vines clings to the schist rock, producing the grapes that will become the world's finest Port and Douro wines. The view from above is simply breathtaking.

The River of Gold

The River of Gold

The Douro River - whose name comes from the Latin for gold - winds 213 kilometres through the valley, its calm waters reflecting the terraced hillsides. Watch traditional wooden rabelo boats navigate the same river that once carried wine barrels to Porto's famous wine lodges.

Pinhão and the Villages

Pinhão and the Villages

At the heart of the Upper Douro, the village of Pinhão is famous for its stunning azulejo-tiled train station, each panel depicting the valley's wine harvest. Nearby schist villages cling to hillsides in time-forgotten quietude, their stone houses glowing amber in the afternoon sun.

A Quinta Wine Tasting

A Quinta Wine Tasting

No Douro journey is complete without stepping inside one of the valley's legendary quintas - manor wine estates where grapes are still trodden by foot in granite lagares. Taste the jewels of the valley: a young Douro red, a tawny Port, and if you're lucky, a vintage that will live in memory long after the valley is behind you.
