Gerês, Portugal's Wild Heart

Gerês, Portugal's Wild Heart

Ancient Forests, Cascading Waterfalls and Untamed Wilderness

Wonders of the National Park

Peneda-Gerês is Portugal's only national park - and one of the most biologically diverse and scenically spectacular landscapes in the Iberian Peninsula. Rivers carve through granite gorges, ancient oak and laurel forests shelter wolves and wild Garrano horses, and schist villages perch on hillsides that Roman legionaries once marched through. A day in Gerês is a reminder of what Europe looked like before the modern world.

The Cascades of Gerês

The Cascades of Gerês

Gerês is a land of waterfalls. The most famous is the Cascata do Arado - a series of falls tumbling through a narrow granite gorge into pools clear enough to reveal every pebble on the riverbed. In summer, the pools are a natural swimming spot of extraordinary beauty; in winter, the volume of water transforms the falls into something thunderous and elemental. Other cascades - Fecha de Barjas, Tahiti - are equally spectacular.

The Caniçada and Lindoso Reservoirs

The Caniçada and Lindoso Reservoirs

The great reservoir lakes of Gerês, set among forested mountain slopes, create landscapes of mirror-still water reflecting ancient granite villages and hillside terraces. The Lindoso reservoir is particularly dramatic - when water levels drop in summer, the submerged foundations of the old village of Vilarinho das Furnas emerge from the depths like a ghost town, a poignant reminder of what was lost when the valley was flooded in 1971.

The Schist Villages

The Schist Villages

Scattered through the valleys and hillsides of Gerês are ancient stone villages that time appears to have forgotten - clusters of schist houses, communal bread ovens, Roman milestones, and medieval granaries (espigueiros) perched on stilts to protect the corn from rats. The village of Lindoso, overlooked by its 13th-century castle, and the hamlet of Soajo with its spectacular granary terrace are particularly striking.

Roman Roads and Walking Trails

Roman Roads and Walking Trails

Gerês is crisscrossed with ancient paths, including sections of the Roman military road from Braga to Astorga (Via XVIII) - still paved with the original milestones and fitted stones laid two millennia ago. Walking these roads through the forest, you follow in the footsteps of legions, pilgrims, and generations of mountain farmers. The park's network of marked trails ranges from gentle riverside walks to demanding summit ridges with views across two countries.
