Where the River Meets the Atlantic in Perfect Harmony

Viana do Castelo Unveiled

Presiding over the mouth of the Lima River where it flows into the Atlantic, Viana do Castelo is widely considered the most beautiful city in northern Portugal. Its harmonious Renaissance centre, crowned by the neo-Byzantine Basilica of Santa Luzia glowing white on the hilltop above, is complemented by an extraordinary folk culture - Viana's embroidered costumes and gold filigree jewellery are among Portugal's most iconic.

Basilica of Santa Luzia

Basilica of Santa Luzia

Perched 250 metres above the city on Monte de Santa Luzia, this imposing neo-Byzantine basilica - modelled loosely on the Sacré-Cœur in Paris - commands one of the most spectacular panoramas in Portugal. The view from the dome stretches from the Lima estuary across the Atlantic coast to the mountains of the Minho. A funicular railway climbs the wooded hill; the walk takes 30 minutes through terraced gardens.

The Eiffel Bridge

The Eiffel Bridge

The wrought-iron railway bridge spanning the Lima River was designed by a pupil of Gustave Eiffel and opened in 1878 - one of the engineering marvels of its age. From its graceful arc you get the classic postcard view of Viana: the basilica on the hill, the red rooftops of the old town below, and the broad Lima shimmering between them. Pedestrians can cross on a lower walkway for extraordinary views.

The Renaissance Centre

The Renaissance Centre

Viana's historic centre is a masterpiece of 16th-century urban planning - broad streets of granite-fronted houses converging on the extraordinary Praça da República, where the loggia of the old Misericórdia almshouse faces the exuberant Gothic town fountain. The scale and quality of the architecture reflects the enormous wealth that flowed through this port during the Age of Discovery, when Viana traders shipped cod from Newfoundland across Europe.

The Gil Eannes Hospital Ship

The Gil Eannes Hospital Ship

Moored permanently in Viana's marina, the Gil Eannes is one of the most fascinating museum ships in Portugal - a floating hospital that served the Portuguese cod-fishing fleet on the Grand Banks of Newfoundland from 1955 to 1973. Visitors can tour the operating theatre, wards, chapel, and captain's quarters, and gain a vivid understanding of the gruelling life of the bacalhau fishermen whose traditions shaped northern Portugal.
