The São Gonçalo Bridge
The 18th-century bridge of São Gonçalo - built in granite between 1782 and 1790, after a flood swept away the earlier bridge in 1763 - spans the Tâmega at Amarante's most iconic viewpoint. From its stone arches, the reflection of the monastery tower, the baroque church façade, and the granite mansions of the Rua 31 de Janeiro create one of Portugal's most photographed scenes. The bridge is named for Amarante's patron saint, whose tomb draws pilgrims from across the region.
