Coimbra Unveiled

Coimbra occupies a hillside above the Mondego River and has been a centre of learning since the 13th century. Its university - one of the oldest in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site - crowns the Alta, the upper city, while below, in the Baixa, students in black capes fill the café terraces and Fado performances echo through the stone alleys. This is a city that lives and breathes its extraordinary heritage.

University of Coimbra

Chartered by King Dinis in 1290, beginning in Lisbon, and permanently established in Coimbra in 1537, this is one of the oldest universities in continuous operation in the world. The hilltop campus - a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2013 - is a journey through Portuguese architectural history, from the Via Latina colonnade to the ornate Baroque clocktower and the extraordinary ceremonial halls of the Paço das Escolas.

The Joanina Library

Completed in 1728 and named in honour of King João V, who authorised its construction, the Biblioteca Joanina is one of the most beautiful rooms in the world. Three interconnected halls, their two-storey gilded oak shelves housing about 60,000 volumes. The painted ceilings, the gold leaf, and the smell of the ancient books combine to create an almost overwhelming sensory experience.

Coimbra Fado

Unlike Lisbon's Fado, Coimbra Fado is a traditionally male art, performed by university students and graduates in their black academic capes, it carries a particular quality of yearning and intellectualism. The lyrics deal with saudade, lost love, and the passing of youth. To hear Coimbra Fado performed live on the stone steps of the old university quarter is an unforgettable experience.

The Old Cathedral (Sé Velha)

One of the finest examples of Romanesque architecture in Portugal, the Sé Velha was begun in the 12th century and its basic structure finished in the early 13th - a solid fortress-like building, and the only Portuguese Romanesque cathedral of the Reconquista era to survive relatively intact. Its crenellated roofline and austere carved portal contrast beautifully with the elaborate Gothic altarpiece within. The cloister, with its pointed arches and carved capitals, is one of the most serene spaces in the city.

Good to Know

Before Your Coimbra Day

Coimbra rewards the curious visitor. Here is what to know before you go.

Can we visit the Joanina Library?

Yes, but entry is timed and slots sell out. The Joanina Library holds about 60,000 volumes from the 16th-18th centuries in gilded Baroque bookcases - it is one of the most beautiful interiors in the world. We can book your entry in advance, at an additional cost.

Is Fado performed during the day?

Coimbra Fado is traditionally performed in the evening. Fado ao Centro, in the Rua do Quebra Costas, stages a daily Coimbra Fado show at 18:00, so a later return to Porto lets you hear it live. Earlier in the day you can still wander the atmospheric lanes of the Baixa - your guide will know the current options.

What makes Coimbra Fado different from Lisbon Fado?

Coimbra Fado is traditionally sung by male university students in academic robes. It is more formal, literary, and melancholy than Lisbon Fado, with roots in the academic and cultural life of the university.

Is the university open to visitors?

Yes. The university complex (the Paço das Escolas) is open to visitors with a ticket that includes the Joanina Library, the Royal Palace and St Michael's Chapel. Opening hours and access to the university tower change, so check the official visitor site before you go.

What is the Queima das Fitas festival?

The Queima das Fitas is the annual end-of-year celebration where graduating students burn their faculty ribbons. Held in May, it fills the city with music and festivities and is one of the most joyful events in Portugal.
