Today the Sanctuary of Fátima draws millions of pilgrims from every corner of the globe each year - a place of extraordinary spiritual power, architectural grandeur, and profound human stories.
The Sanctuary of Fátima is one of the largest pilgrimage complexes in the world - a vast ceremonial esplanade flanked by colonnaded porticos and framing the two great basilicas. At its heart stands the Chapel of the Apparitions, the holiest point on the site, built at the spot in the Cova da Iria where the apparitions took place.
Built on the very spot where the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared to Lúcia, Francisco and Jacinta during the 1917 apparitions (five of the six took place at the Cova da Iria, the August one at nearby Valinhos), this modest chapel - always fragrant with candle smoke and flowers - is the spiritual heart of Fátima. Pilgrims arrive here day and night, many completing the final approach on their knees as an act of devotion. The atmosphere is deeply moving whatever one's beliefs.
Consecrated in 2007, this remarkable modern basilica by architect Alexandros Tombazis can seat more than 8,600 worshippers. Its simple, circular interior is softened by large gilded panels covering about 500 square metres in the presbytery.
To understand Fátima is to walk alongside the pilgrims. From May to October, pilgrims gather on the esplanade around the 13th of each month, with the largest pilgrimages on 12-13 May and 12-13 October and a vast candlelight procession in the evening, recalling the miraculous day of October 13th 1917 when the sun appeared to dance in the sky before tens of thousands of witnesses. At any time of year, the diversity of the faithful - from African bishops to young backpackers - makes Fátima a uniquely human place.
The Day in Fátima
A 2-hour drive south from Porto brings you to the Cova da Iria - the meadow where the three shepherd children reported the Marian apparitions in 1917. The sanctuary that grew around it is one of the largest in the world.
Morning
We depart Porto in the morning and drive approximately 2 hours south to Fátima. Your guide will introduce the history of the 1917 apparitions and the story of the three shepherd children during the journey.
Late morning
The small Chapel of Apparitions stands on the spot where the Virgin is said to have appeared to the children. Simple, intimate, and always quietly busy with pilgrims, it is the spiritual heart of the sanctuary.
Midday
The vast Cova da Iria esplanade connects the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary with the striking modern Basilica of the Holy Trinity (opened 2007). Time to explore both at your own pace.
Afternoon
Optional lunch, with a choice of meat or fish, at a selected restaurant in Fátima, available on request.
Late afternoon
A walk through Valinhos, site of the August 1917 apparition, next to the peaceful village of Aljustrel where the shepherd children of Fátima grew up, marked by rural simplicity and authenticity.

A visit to the house of Lúcia, one of the seers of Fátima, immersing yourself in her life story and the message that touched the world.

We begin the 2-hour return drive to Porto, arriving in the early evening.

Fátima welcomes visitors of all backgrounds. Here are the most common questions about a day at the sanctuary.
Yes. The entire sanctuary complex - the Chapel of Apparitions, the esplanade, both basilicas, and the outdoor areas - is completely free to visit. Some museums in the town are ticketed, and we can arrange entry for you at an additional cost.
Modest dress is respectfully requested throughout the sanctuary. Shorts and sleeveless tops are not appropriate. A light scarf or cardigan to cover shoulders is always a good idea.
Absolutely. Fátima is historically, architecturally, and humanly remarkable regardless of faith. The story of the three children and the extraordinary global impact of the 1917 events is a compelling historical narrative as much as a spiritual one.
Yes. The 12th and 13th of May and the 12th and 13th of October draw hundreds of thousands of pilgrims from around the world. These are extraordinary days to witness, but very crowded. Other times of year are much quieter.
Masses are held daily in the basilicas and at the Chapel of Apparitions at various times. If attending a Mass is important to you, let us know when booking and we will time the day accordingly.
