The Historic Douro Railway
Few railway journeys in the world match the Douro line for sheer scenic drama. Built along the steep banks of the river in the late 19th century, the line from Régua to Pinhão winds for some 24 kilometres through the heart of the terraced wine country - clinging to the cliff face above the river, diving through rock tunnels, and emerging at bends that reveal ever more spectacular views of the vine-covered schist slopes and the broad, slow river below. The station at Pinhão is decorated with blue-and-white azulejo tile panels depicting scenes of Douro life and the grape harvest. The journey from Régua to Pinhão is, quite simply, one of the most scenic train rides in Portugal.
